What's Up with These Reviews?

Before I begin my very much opinionated rant about how I've seen people rate books let me just say...why do I think that I'm a blogger? Like who lied and told me I could do this because why did I vanish after just 1 post?

Okay here are my best excuses:

1. Lack of motivation

2. Not being sure what exactly I want to post

3. Feeling like no one even notices 

4. Lack of creativity (like what font do I use, what language should I use, how long should a post be)

I say all this to say I'm new to this. I have no idea what I'm doing. Every single thing on here is me trying new things as this is a hobby.

No like on a serious note, I'll try to be on here more often because my Instagram is very much formulaic. I'm figuring it out every day. Follow my Twitter for a more real me since I keep it cute on Instagram 😅 I'll keep it a bit more real on here 😉

Alright, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

I've been paying attention to book reviews and I'm noticing these things (below), mostly in the low reviews.

The following points may discuss mature content. Please be sure that you are of age before reading!

1. Off-Topic Low Ratings 

One of the most aggravating things I see on reviews is when people's reason for a bad rating includes something like "the conflict could've been resolved if they just talked" uhhhh... Well, this conflict is very much part of the plot so its removal would result in a completely different book. Therefore, you're off-topic. You're discussing a different plot, ia. a different book. This goes into the next one, being able to figure out when something belongs and/or works in the book and when it doesn't.

2. Flawed Characters vs. Bad Writing 

If the author decides to present their characters as ruthless, heartless, and lawless, then babes... that's what it is!!! That is the author's vision, something that they decide to do. If it isn't your cup of tea that's okay, however, it doesn't automatically mean it's bad writing. For example, I'm reading Bound by Honor by Cora Reilly and it's a dark mafia romance. There's a repetitive amount of misogyny and slut-shaming. And I had to pause for a second and think. This is a dark mafia romance. Of course, we do not condone that type of language and many authors make it a point to keep it to a minimum. However, for the sake of the plot, the universe, the fullness of the characters within their flaws, the author may choose to lean into these archaic ideals, and some others may choose not to. In my opinion, this does not equate to bad writing. This is just the route that the author took with her book. And then as you read along, you can spot different characters who share different views. In my opinion, that shows that the archaic ideals are all part of the certain characters who represent the villains.

3. Low Rating Out of Disappointment 

I just might be an author at heart or something because of how much I empathize with authors. I totally understand that when certain tropes are promoted, we have our pre-made conceptions of them. We imagine what the trope(s) could entail. We expect certain things to go a certain way. We expect to see this and that from characters. However, readers let us all begin to step inside the book that we're reading. Allow your predictions to be wrong! Allow your preconceived notions to drag along as you read but don't consider their inclusion as the only way that this book could be considered well-written. Trust that these authors wrote these stories in the ways that they were inspired to do so. Again your favorite plot points NOT being included do not automatically mean bad writing. Our perceptions just differ!

4. Overly Mean Reviews

This is very much a me problem I guess 🤷🏾‍♀️ but oh my gosh, some of y'all are absolutely RUTHLESS in these reviews, especially to these popular authors that everyone and their mothers compliment. Like y'all go crazy on these reviews almost like y'all are fully out to get these authors. Hoping to discourage them from ever publishing anything ever again and/or question every chapter in every book they've ever released. On a very serious note, if you're that kind of reviewer, I'mma need YOUR wonderfully written, 5 star worthy masterpiece like yesterday because you must write one!

Overall, let these authors breathe I beg.
